"Love may be strong, but a habit is stronger."
It is our free will to struggle against what we don't want but what we habitually do (as per Paul's "old man") or to give in and claim that "it must be God's will that we are like this because otherwise He would change us." and therefore we shouldn't even try to change or God would have changed us already, though such change is contrary to our free will.
