Chris when I was doing my s.o course there was a guy there who was very vulnerable. He was about 25 but his mental age was probably much younger than that. He had been in prison for over a year for having sex with a fourteen year old girl. It transpired gradually, as we pieced together his story from the bits that he was able to tell us, that the girl had more or less offered herself to him whilst visiting his flat with her older sister. He just wasn't capable of reasoning how dangerous a situation he was being put in and he wasn't able to say no. When one of the staff at the course more or less accused him of raping this girl I got very angry because his prison sentence reflected the fact that none of his jurors had felt that this was the case. He himself was unable to get angry. In fact he almost agreed with her because he just didn't really understand the difference between having sex and rape anyway. He agreed with all of the staff on everything and yet they didn't seem to understand why this was. This guy was unable to say no to anything really: he was the gentlest, most easily led person that I have ever come across. Many pedophiles are pedophiles because they have no chance of forming adult relationships, lacking the wherewithal or the intelligence to cope in an adult world. They are wide open to entrapment by the police being unable to assess risk in any realistic way. Our (your) prisons are full of people like this. You say "And yes, I think they must be sick to even consider doing such a thing" but they are not sick they are just vulnerable in a hard brutal society that has no time for losers. The really sick ones are often clever enough to avoid being caught. This is why entrapment of that sort is frankly barbaric.
