I can only talk about this from my own perspective. As a young man I hada severe problem with 'duality' and I still go through phases today.(I am going through one right now as it happens) I suspect (selfdiagnosis) that my boyloving tendency is all tied up with this. The duality is reinforced in a thousand different ways by 'stifling social norms' (including the Law). It is also preached from a thousand different pulpits (which includes some important holy books). It is preached (perhaps as a subtext) by Paul in his letters and it takes a lot of prayer, a lot of plain old human experience and a lot of help from others to resolve this innate dualism in the 'Christian' (as well as other faiths) view of the world. The danger of leaning into Gnosticism is a very real and very present one, especially in more 'extremely spiritual' circles.
I think you are right: a truly spiritual person has resolved this dualism but it takes years and years to do. At least thats how it seems from my perspective.
As an afterthought in all of this, I think it fair to say that the Christian doctrine, when viewed wholely, is all about the way in which God became man. This was His way of resolving for us the crippling Dualism of 'God up there and Man down here'. But to be a 'true' Christian is not a day's work - it certainly hasn't been for me anyhow! The fundamentalist idea that it happens in a blinding flash as it did for Paul is certainly not my experience!
