I think ALL people are ungrateful by nature. Further, I think we are very greedy by nature.

Gratitude and sharing need to be taught and we lean the lessons reluctantly and need constant reminder.

If you want a boy to be grateful, and his rents haven't taught him to be, try and teach it to him as best you can.... otherwise... /shrugs. I guess you just have to put up with it.
