I find it hard to imagine how they could translate the feelings described in the book to film. Without dialogue or plot to move the action forward and without the ability to describe feelings like books can...what have you got left?

Well, all I can say is, watch the movie and decide for yourself. I was highly impacted by it at an emotional level, so for me, certainly, the film was very successful at conveying feelings.
