What I don't understand is the difference between "hate crimes" and defending oneself against an offence.

Like... it's a crime to persecute someone for their heterosexuality or homosexuality.... but if they make an unwelcome sexual advance that is a arguably a crime of assult.

There is a difference between not persecuting someone because their orientation is a pedo.... and prosecuting someone who engages sexually (and illegally) with a child. Yet the people pushing this bill seem to think there is not.
