What matters is not whether people believe in hell or not. What matters is how that theology is used. If lake of fire theology is abused, then it is the abuse of that theology that should be attacked, not the theology its self. The theology its self is sound, there is ample evidence for it in the bible and even more in Christian tradition. That's not to say that it is true, only that it is sound and as likely to be true as alternative explenations. The theology is not an issue of any importance since it is not something that affects us in any way, what is of importance is how it is used.
As to whether fire and brimstone preaching still goes on...I don't have any good statistics on that. However, what I can say is that the only time I have ever encountered it in my extensive travels and the dozens of churches I have attended, it was coming from the mouth of an obviously deranged invidual yelling out his version of the gospel in the town square of a major US city. If this is really how people are likely to encounter that garbage...is it really anything we need to be too worried about? Even the evangelism crews that raid spring break destinations and mardi gras every year are using a good news approach and not fire and brimstone. |
