I don't know the details of how this has been concluded. But when dealing with sexual identity what they are mainly talking about is whether a child identifies as a boy or a girl and all of the associated social constructs that come with that. Whether sexual attraction is part of that or not depends on who you talk to.
OK, whoa, back up. All along I have (maybe ignorantly) been using "sexual identity" as synonymous with "sexual orientation". It didn't even occur to me there was any fundamental different. I can totally accept that sexual identity could be set by ages 3 to 6 if all we're talking about is whether a child identifies as a boy or a girl (and accepts the associated social constructs). [I'm sure I would have done just fine with such a test at that age. I have always seen myself as a boy and accepted the social constructs, though I admit that I could have been seen as a bit of a "weak" boy...] But now you're saying that "whether sexual attraction is part of that or not depends on who you talk to", and, "chances are that sexual orientation is hardwired by the time a child reaches kindergarten". I'm sorry for confusing the terms identity with orientation. That being said, the evidence that orientation is hardwired so early doesn't seem all that compelling (based on how you've described it). If attractions only start manifesting in a child later in life, how can anyone know prior to that time whether or not such attractions are hardwired? Am I missing something? Have any studies been done that have shown conclusively (within a reasonable margin of error) that orientation is hardwired at such an early age? Blessings, Rainboy |
