I have a profession that I already find quite satisfying, already. ;-) However, having recently been (mis)diagnosed with a terminal illness, I have though about these issues. Specifically, I asked that my boyfriend make sure that I would not have to suffer needlessly. I wasn't asking him to assist in suicide as that would not have been necessary. But I DID ask him to ensure that no heroic measures be taken once I'd reached a state where my body was not able to sustain itself. Privately, I contemplated measures intended to ensure that things never got quite to that point. I believe those decisions were mine. I don't believe that legistation ought to be allowed to address such an intensely personal decision. I also believe that if a sick person wishes to take his own life he ought to be able to procure competent assistance. |
