I can't help but feel that Mark Twain was telling his own story with Tom Sawyer, i.e. Becky was a girl that he fancied and Tom Sawyer being his imaginary self - just speculation!

Thomas Mann was telling his own story in "A Death in Venice", except that his hearthrob was 10 years old boy not a 14 years old.
