I have to say that as simple as marc put this... It's my opinion, and that of my mother that instilled it in me, that just being there for your friend is probably the best thing that you can do for your friend. I have a roomate right now that tells me things that he wouldn't tell anyone else. I just listen as much as I can and sympithise (I know I didn't spell that right) with him. And you know what? It's working with him. He just blurts things out about himself and I just play counselor. (So to speak of course!) Point being, Just being there and lending that ear to listen to his woes is sometimes the best a friend can be. And probably all your friend wants to do, which is vent.
