My own view on this is that the hysteria (as you rightly call it) has become a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy so that boys who have engaged in sexual activity when young begin to wonder if this is not therefore the cause of later problems - especially if well-meaning psychologists and social workers plant the idea in their minds. (I am not including serious cases in this: I am merely talking about mutual or near-mutual experimentation - the distinction seems essential - though none the less extremely hard [in some cases] to tease out especially because the public pressure is all one way.)
I remember when I was living abroad I had a sort of psychic experience - except of course it wasn't really: it was just that when I mentioned it to the naive and believing locals it immediately became just that: a valid psychic experience and the more they made me talk about it the more convinced I myself became . . .
Psychologists tend to have a scientific viewpoint which artificially separates them from their 'patient'. The reality is very different as those terrible cases of multiple 'child-abuse' in the 80s (?) clearly indicate. The moment a person is placed with a psychologist (even before discussion takes place) interaction happens: causes and problems begin to develop even where there weren't any before. False links can be made with the mere raising of an eyebrow. Once verbalised,however tentatively,there is no going back. Just as a vulnerable person might be an easy victim in a sexual encounter, so is he an easy victim to the mindset of an eager psychologist.
Recent scandals (particularly the Catholic church in both Ireland and America) make any attempt to delineate between genuine abuse and mere experimentation seriously problematic. I just feel that needs to be borne in mind in the present climate and remember, on your course, that there is only one agenda from their point of view: no subtlety, no gradation, no exception.
