The were wrong if they goal was to describe the elephant and not parts of it. You just made a great point that just because you know a part of something unless you know the whole you can be lead to believe the wrong thing such as God is jealous and not jealous all at the same time. Unless we allow the Spirit of God to show us God in his fullness then we will always walk around with a partial view that will lead us to the wrong conclusions.
