My approach is to start from the type of logic which Jesus is recorded as having used to establish his position and discomfort his enemies. The classic example of this is in Matthew 22:
43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says, 44 " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." ' [a] 45 If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" This is reflected in Hebrews 1: 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. which then goes on to expound the reality of the status of Jesus. The purpose of Bible study is to discover God's will for us; if we are able to trump it with 'but God's not like that', the whole project collapses in a heap. Which is not to claim that Evangelicals haven't been badly wrong in the past (e.g. over the prohibition of alcohol), though it is worth remembering that they were at the forefront of the fight for the abolition of slavery on both sides of the Atlantic, so did not find themselves constrained by the chains which Robert-I tries to refer to. |
