I'm responding in this post to to http://cblf.org/messages/59782.htm which is some way off the top of the board now. However given the scale of the post and the obvious effort that went into writing it, it deserves a full reply and perhaps one that gets more attention than if I merely reply at its present location. It also raises a series of different issues which are likely to generate very different arguments, so to enable that I've split my reply into different threads to enable this.
