It's best not to cherry-pick the bible. Read the whole thing, except the genealogy lists, pray and meditate on it, and an overview begins to form. Then keep reading lots of diverse parts of it. It always seems new, since the spirit shows you new aspects of it every time.

Having a commentary around to explain the tougher bits is a good idea too. You can easily get it all online at http://scripturetext.com/ , but I find that the best place to read the Bible is while commuting on public transit. So if you go to school or work, put away your car keys and do something useful with your transit time.
