what I see in this passage is a sort of description of God and of what He calls us to share in. It protects, nurtures, cultivates, and radiates. All around me through my life, amongst some turmoil and darkness I have glimpsed people living like this - in the image of God - not consistently, not every minute every day, in some cases not very often but often enough for me to have noticed and to have understood a little that these are signs of God amongst us.
the thing about jealousy is really interesting. On the one hand I do know that God is a jealous God but perhaps it is why he is jealous that is important. He is not jealous because he cannot stand us looking at another (false god) but because he knows there is no truth in any other god and that we hurt ourselves (and others) when we do (eg drugs, alcohol etc). His jealousy is more like Jesus' parable of the shepherd who goes off in search of the lost sheep. fiercely protective perhaps? having said that it is also true that God does not force any sort of protective relationship upon us. He makes a covenant with us but only when we come to meet him like the prodigal son. So the jealousy of God is nothing like human jealousy. When you say at the end: 'Things begin not to add up the way they were told to me.' that seems to me a very positive thing because we each have to find our own way to God and it can be a long struggle with inherited dogma. For years I couldnt say great chunks of the creed because they didn't make sense to me. On the other hand, I would have to admit now that that was mostly arrogance on my part but it was also I think a part of a personal quest for truth. |
