MCC's, being ecumenical, vary a lot. The one where I live is very large, enthusiastically Christian, but made up mostly of people raised Catholic, Anglican (Episcopal) or United (Presybyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist), so it isn't strong on the basic fundamentalist (Baptist, Pentecostal) catch-phrases. The churches in Texas and other southern parts can be very Baptist-like in nature and you can see Pentecostalisms like dancing in the spirit at national conferences. The Baltimore church yielded up a great gospel singer/preacher, Rev. Dolores Berry, http://www.revdeloresberry.com/ , who is so spirit-filled that it just makes you shake. Alas, MCC's are not notably open to tolerating BLs; we represent the bad old days when gays were hated. Everyone is against abuse of power, and the feminist idea that BLs constitutively abuse power is omnipresent. Some people interpret the Pauline scriptures as being denunciations of Greek paederasty. I've rather let my membership lapse without explaining why, which is naughty of me but I don't know what else to do about it. Self-understanding has its cost. I miss them, though. Good people. |
