I have to disagree with you initial dismissal of Adam and Eve as merely prototypes. The logic of the New Testament collapses in a heap if there is no specific moment of fall when Adam chooses to sin and so causes sin to come to rule the world.
Once that piece of logic is in place, the rest of my argument follows without significant difficulty - it reflects what God intended in the beginning, not what we experience now which is totally messed up as a result of sin in the world. And, of course this fits with a lot of other theology of suffering... I guess the shamanistic concept can be reinterpreted as a reflection of the collective memory of a time when things were right - an awareness that things SHOULD be better but are actually a mess. |
