Such as 'parry,' to fend off. Ironically, some of those words did eventually get an 'e' at the critical juncture in English, like 'imperative' and 'vituperate,' but you still have others like 'prepare' as good role models for 'separate.'

You don't need to study Latin for all this; I haven't so far.
