We have so many labels because, in the late 1770's, a Swedish guy who styled himself Linnaeus published some revolutionary books classifying a lot of plant and animal species. This made everyone who considered themself scientific go in for taxonomy in a big way, so everything was labelled up by 1900. In the matter of sexual differences, Karl-Maria Kertbeny coined the label "homosexual" in around 1869 as part of an inspiration he had to campaign for the civil rights of a group previously only known by the term "pederasts," derived from ancient Greek. This term was somewhat misleading for many people with same-sex orientation because it implied that men would always just be attracted to teens. Of course, as we know around here, there ARE some like that... but it's only part of the picture. see *http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kertbeny So, who should pick up the label "homosexual" and make it famous but the ultimate medical classifier of sex drives, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, whose 1886 book Psychopathia sexualis also first coined the term "paedophilia." His scheme for classifying sexualities is basically still in use, in a slightly tweaked version. I'm afraid if you don't like labels, you'll have to destroy science. |
