His father is ex-military and is trying to shape him up by having him join a military-supported youth organization, which the boy actually does like.

Other than that, he's doing his best to be a firm but loving dad, but he loses some respect because he has like 3 martinis every night and makes some decisions about what the boy can and can't do that seem poorly justified. So they fight a lot.

The boy is adopted and occasionally threatens to go back to the Children and Family Services.

I sometimes help out by explaining the viewpoint of one of them to the other.
