The idea is that the New England elite only send their kids to the top ten boarding schools: (St. Marks, Groton, Middlesex, St. Pauls, Philips Exeter, Philips Andover, Choate, The Hill, etc.) "St. Grottlesex" is the omnibus abbreviation. I, as a San Diego boy, could never quite believe that real people would get their identities so tied up in that kind of silliness, but let me tell you: I got to the Boston Athenaeum two weeks ago, by a Boston friend, and afer the event, two old boys were going at it hammer and tongs on the doorstep: "Well I went to Middlesex! Well I went to Choate! Well, I went to Middlesex! Well, I went to Choate!" **sigh** The wine & cheese were top-notch, tho.
