I can think of times in my life when this would have appalled me: to the Beethovenian rebel in us it can seem overly fatalistic,(cowed even), self-fulfilling and reinforcing the notion of God as a wilful,heartless Old Testament tyrant.
At the moment however, where I can almost feel the red-hot coals raining down as refreshing rain, it makes perfect sense. Even Beethoven, in his later years, came to understand this: 'es muss sein!' (op.135)
