I like what you say about the 5percent. The problem is that, for the majority of people, all they hear about pedophiles are the awful extreme cases through the press. The internet has made people aware that there are far more people like us who are attracted to younger people. They put two and two together and make five hundred because they forget to do one essential thing: think. The added problem is that people who are attracted to minors cannot speak out and explain. Once we are 'found out' we can never expect to be listened to except perhaps by friends and family - who trust us to start with. Dakota is also right to say that people need something to hate. Over recent years it has become unacceptable (quite rightly) to hate people for their race, or religion, or disability, or level of intelligence. In the case of 'pedophiles', on the other hand, is the other way round: this is the only group of people whom it has become unacceptable NOT to hate. Occasionally, courageous and thoughtful people voice their concern about this and the result is always the same: condemnation and ostracism. Recently there was a discussion on the radio in the UK about pedophilia amongst thoughtful people. They tried their best I suppose but, since there were no pedophiles there to help them sort out fact from fiction, it really was a case of the blind leading the blind. My hope is that, once the internet has become a more accepted and trusted phenomenon (it's still very much in its infancy), the panic will subside. It will probably not happen in my lifetime however.
