I wouldn't be that pessimistic about the human nature. What we see in our everyday life does not go that deep beyond the surface that we could say something valid about our nature.

And on that surface, on that skin if you want, most people show their mechanisms of defense. Most of those mechanisms are born out of fear (fear, not hate being the opposite to love. Hate is misguided love.)

So it is not the often incredible beauty inside us we see but a distorted one, which is also coloured by our own perception.

There is a firm foundation in everyone. It is called the spark of god.

Through trust, through prayer and the grace of god this defense becomes more and more porous.
