Actually, broad categories are the cause of misunderstandings all the time. They are terrible, because they assume that everything within the category is logically identical, which must first be proven. The worst, and easiest, category blunder is the A or not A category definition. Sometimes it is valid, but more often than not, it is invalid. For instance, if "A" is the set of all even numbers, then one can logically say that "not A" is the set of all odd numbers, right? Not so fast! Zero is in the set of "not A", but is not odd (zero is considered neither even nor odd).

The point is that just because something doesn't fit into one category (approved, normative sexual orientation) doesn't mean that it necessearily fits into the logically opposing category (condemned orientations) because a third, or more, category might exist (non-normative but still approved orientations).

To add a bit of a response to the "normative"-ness of heterosexuality, yes it is needed for procreation. That is clear from a purely naturalistic perspective. But homosexuality is also found in nealry all mammal species. Several even show exclusive homosexual tendencies. And it appears to serve a number of purposes, differeing in each species. In some, it forms part of the social structure: procreative copulation is restricted to the leaders, but close bonds amongst same sex individuals are expressed by sex. In others, it is higher functioning where gay members, lacking their own offspring to care for, will care for the young of others, either simply helping them, or taking over in case of the parent's death or abandonment.

It just so happens that in our society, if gay marriage were allowed, and the same number of gay people got married as to straights, and the same number of those adopted kids as straights have their own (using the WHO and European statistics on how many homosexuals there are) we would adopt every child currently waiting in the system, and be looking for more. All 600,000+ of them. Instantly. Gay marriage could fix the "system" in one fell swoop, taking with it the largest predictor of criminal behavior later in life. Just something to think about that God might have had in mind as a purpose for us all. Just maybe it will someday be as "obvious" as the need for breeders themselves.
