It may be a better idea to report suspicious behavior rather than confront the person you have no idea about. It's not a crime to ask the police for advice before deciding to confront them. I'm glad you were there to help. I'm sure you are a valued member of the pre-school staff, and you being a male may help you keep your job, since so few take on a job like that.
