Alright, this is good! We're in agreement about polygamy, and about the profoundly mentally disabled. (I *do* believe that the profoundly mentally disabled should not be permitted to marry, despite my complete lack of faith in our government to manage to handle such a law and its subsequent definitions responsibly: they never have before.) If that makes me a horrible person, fine, but someone with the cognitive functioning of a 6y/o should not be encouraged to have sexual relationships; it would be rape.

About the distinctions, however: not all arguments need be based solely in scripture. Yes, it is the Word of God, but God made the world and its systems and patterns too, and gave us sensory organs and logic (and the Holy Spirit!) so that we can draw upon that as well. This is what the Book of Wisom and the Song of Solomon and the Psalms call "wisdom": using the "Gestalt" of our observations of God's world and our experience of divine Revelation together to grow in understanding into more perfect beings. When the scripture does not provide our answers directly or completely, we must then look to the rest of God's Poi'ema. The scripture doesn't tell us that the Earth revolves around the sun, but our observations of the world tell us so. The scripture doesn't tell us that women are capable and qualified leaders and not just their husband's property, but our observations of the world tell us so. The scripture doesn't tell us that animals aren't capable of the true passion-fire of mariage love, but an honest observation of the world tells us so. (If you'd really like to take up the zoophilia banner and debate that fully, I can handle it, but it's starting to feel like beating a dead horse. [insert "bad pun groan" here])

So, I'm still going to stand by my conclusion that there is no slippery slope from approval of homosexuality to approval of sinful things. We are at least trying to be wiser than that.

Love in Christ,
~CSL
