My nick comes from quite simply C. S. Lewis my favorite Christian thinker, and still one of the best since Augustine. In addition to just being a gret mind and a true prophet, Lewis' personal story has many parallels to my own: raised in a Christian family and a hypocritical church, railed against God for years until coming face to face with the simple, unprovable reailty of God's existence and presence in our lives. I did my railing much earlier than he did (starting in 3rd grade, about 6 y/o!), but still so similar. When I read his "Pilgrim's Regress", it was like looking in a mirror (a very metaphorical mirror!).
On a related question, my siggie quote comes from my favorite fiction series "Dune" by Frank Herbert. A must read for anyone interested in the definition of humanity, religion, psychology, politics or economics and how they all interact. The quote is from the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, who are a mystical order of women who try to enginneer the flow of history through political maneuvers, religious manipulation, advanced martial arts training, and powerful psychological tricks and perception. It is one of their novice training tools: The Litany Against Fear. A novice learns to recite it when faced with mind-numbing fear so that she can reassert her logical functions and face the sitation rationally. I have found it to be a very powerful tool in my own, real, life for this exact purpose, and a strong fit with the theological view that fear is the opposite of Love and all that that entails. And so I promote this concept at every opportunity. ~CSL ![]() |
