When the Supreme Court upheld RSO Megan's Laws in the '90s, it noted that these new ex-post-facto laws were primarily protective rather than punitive.

The way things are now in some cities and states, it should be easy to convince a federal district judge that the local or state law is now punitive rather than protective and get those laws tossed on their proverbial asses.

Of course, states will still be free to punish new offenders with very restrictive lifetime probation.

Before any of this can happen, someone has to find a lawyer with enough balls to fight the system, lose his friends, and lose the respect of most of his professional colleagues. You also need someone to fund this lawyer and this person also needs to be willing to throw away the respect of his "decent, upstanding citizen" friends and family members. :(
