I'm sitting here thinking and wondering how old your yf is. Cause if he's a teenager... dude... I wouldn't be taking it too hard right now.

Don't underestimate the impact you've had in his life or his affection for you ... if he is a teen then he's stretching his wings... learning to be independent. I always believe its up to the adult to make the initiative with teens, eventually they grow up and get some maturity and learn that relationships are two way deals.

Be patient and try not to take his distance too personally.
