If you were a convicted money offender, oops, I mean bank embezzler (or, for that matter, someone who was strongly tempted to take what didn't belong to him even if he had never done so), and you felt God called you to be the church treasurer, fine.
But be sure you tell everyone of your past and/or your struggle with an unusually strong temptation. If they ask you to not take on that role, it may be a sign that your discernment of God's call was off. I have a feeling that if God intended you to be treasurer of that church, you could tell of your history and you'd still have the job. Substitute convicted sex offender or pedophile-with-strong-temptations for embezzler or tempted-by-money, and substitute any job dealing with children for church treasurer. Now, if you are a pedophile who for whatever reason is not tempted to have sex with actual children (maybe you fantasize about it, but when you are in their presence the temptation goes away) AND if you do not fantasize about the children in your church, then it is not an issue. If you do fantasize about the children in your church then it is open to debate how open you should be. On one hand, the children are never in actual danger. On the other hand, the parents may not want you fantasizing about their children and they will rationally assume the more time you spend with their child the more you will fantasize about him, and them putting their children in your presence makes them feel guilty. |
