Leaving, Chris, is a very real possibility. For the moment, I'm waiting to see how the search committee is chosen and what comes of it. But it's entirely possible that too few loving Christians will remain to make this battle winnable. And in addition, we have a very expensive-to-maintain old stone and stained glass church building. Our church used to be a wealthy parish when the town was a major factory town 100yrs ago. Now the town is much poorer, and so is the parish. We have been surviving, but only just barely, until this priest came. Now our numbers are smaller every week, and our donations even worse. We are staying afloat solely on the generosity of dead rich people, and it will not last. I mean, we have an ultra-conservative fire-and-brimstone preacher in an Episcopal church in Massachusetts. This marriage is doomed to failure.
