Blasphemy from the pulpit

Posted by CliveStaplesLewis on 2007-07-29 23:20:41, Sunday

I nearly shouted out in the middle of today's sermon as our priest denounced the Law of Love as a whole, preaching openly a gospel based on legalism and fear of hellfire. It was a rebuttal from last week's sermon, which was given by a couple who were the priest and his wife there 15 years ago. They preached about the fact that after their daughter came out to them, a woman in Hawaii whom they had never met before that day that they were in her workshop began the workshop saying to *them* specifically, "The Spirit is telling me that I need to say something to you, and I don't know why: "God is Love. GOD is Love. God IS Love. God is LOVE."" They also brought up "All the law and the prophets depend on these two."

And today our priest told our parish that that was wrong.

It took every fiber of my self control not to stand up and scream at him when he said "You cannot interpret scripture based on a single verse." No, of course we shouldn't interpret all of scripture when Our Lord, Jesus Christ, God Incarnate says "All the law and the prophets are based on this". No, that can't possibly literal. Jesus must just have been speaking metaphorically. We certainly have to take it with a grain of salt, right?

I'm still not sure that *not* standing up and shouting was the right thing to do. It was the *safe* thing to do. I am ashamed that I made the decision based on fear instead of logic though.

Sorrowfully,
~CSL
