Obviously not being married, having sex outside that, or masterbating takes self control. Thing is this takes more self control than most human beings have and if one were to actually succeed in doing it AS WELL AS being mentally celibate you would need to be much more intentional about it than just telling yourself to not do it.
You would need a good plan. "God does not expect perfection I do not think, but obedience. And if we fail, He is there to forgive us." It is true that God does not expect perfection of us but I believe the point is to strive for that. It is in our striving for perfection in Christ that we strengthen our faith. He WILL forgive us but I can easily find several examples of Christ forgiving someone then telling them to stop sinning. "And if we do sin, which most of us will on the subject, repent and move on....attempting to do the right thing" To actually be perfectly celibate you can't just try real hard then if you do think some sexual thought or have sex (with another or your own hand) repent then move on. In fact this is not a great plan to deal with recurring sin in your life in general if you really want it to go away. YES it is theologically sound and I believe God will forgive us but overall it does not help you stop doing it. At least I have found this to be true in my life. After I repent of the sin I THEN ask God to help me find a way to stop doing it and form a plan. If we don't do something like this we will just continue to do the sin and nothing will change except for being forgiven which I have found does not help me stop doing a recurring addicting sin. So how would one accomplish this perfect celibacy? (I mean other than just saying with God's help it will just go away) Your Brother in Christ, Godspell |
