I don't believe in telling children (whether we're talking about actual children or children in Christ) anything that is not true as it is said.
Then you can never teach. Whenever you teach from the bible, you are interpreting the bible for them. If you do not believe in giving people your impression about the word of God, then you do not believe in teaching from the bible. The only way you could teach from the bible without adding personal opinion to what you're teaching is by standing up in front of a class (or sitting down with a student) and reading the bible verbatim without ever interjecting anything, explaining anything, or answering any questions. The moment you start talking about anything that isn't exactly what is written in the bible, you have already begun to do exactly what is done in The Message but to a greater magnitude. At least in The Message they stick to translating only the passage in question whereas in any well prepared lesson you would be translating and interpreting passages from various parts of the bible. If you do not believe in interpreting bible passages for your students, then you cannot teach from the bible because doing so without interpreting is impossible. If you do believe in interpreting bible passages for your students, then how could you be against a book that interprets every passage in the bible? |
