If the mainline churches are actively working to squelch research that may lead to unorthodox conclusions about these works, that's wrong.
BTW, the pedophile/minor-attracted-adult community is facing similar issues: Research which could lead to politically incorrect conclusions regarding the nature of childhood sexuality, pedophilia, and related topics isn't done enough and/or when it reaches the "wrong" conclusions it is buried. This is in large part because researchers can't get funding or because researchers are afraid if they reach a politically incorrect conclusion it will hurt their career. There were two major projects in the '90s and early '00s that generated scandals because they came off looking like "pedophile apologetics" - the APA-published Rind Report (commentary , more commentary, Wikipedia) and Judith Lavene's book Harmful to Minors. Also toxic to those who took part was an effort to loosen up on the DSM's definition of pedophilia. Such an effort will not be made anytime soon in the near future, not seriously anyways. The paper was condemned by the US House of Representatives and led to changes in the way the APA accepts controversial items for publication. Dr. Levine and her original publisher, University of Minnesota Press, got into hot water over her book and the Minnesota State Legislature even chimed in if I recall. |
