If I did say that, it was in an attempt to simplify the subject. The fact is, it is a disorder as defined by the APA. However, it's important to understand why it is considered a disorder. It is considered a disorder because of the effects it can have on people's ability to function in society. It is not considered a disorder because there is something wrong with you per se, but because it makes living in this society difficult.
The APA once tried to further clarify this in their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (volume IV). They added the following criteria to the diagnosis of pedophilia: The fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. Under their revised (and more accurate) definition, you would not be suffering from the disorder known as pedophilia if you were able to find peace with your sexuality and it no longer caused significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. If you found peace with your self like many of us here have done, you would be free from any psychological disorders related to sexuality as far as the psychologists are concerned. Unfortunately, political pressure was brought to bear on the APA and they found themselves forced to release a new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM IV-TR) which removed that criteria from the definition of pedophilia and any other disorder in which there is a "victim". It is technically correct to call pedophilia a disorder. But as you can see from the history of the definition of this disorder; and as you can tell if you have any basic knowledge of how psychology works, this isn't the same as a medical disorder. There is nothing wrong with the way your mind or body functions if you are a pedophile, you just have a personality trait that makes it difficult to function optimally in society. |
