Whenever raising the issue of pedophilia, you should know your audience very well. If you don't know in advance how they will react, don't say anything that could be construed as other-than-conventional-wisdom or maybe conventional-wisdom-with-a-slight-variation.
One exception: If you have personal experience OTHER THAN YOURSELF regarding pedophiles, it may be safe to raise the issue. For example: None of these point to you being a pedophile, so your reputation is not at risk. None of these out anyone who is not already outed. All of these show something good about an individual pedophile. Unfortunately, none of these are on-topic for the article in question. Slightly off-topic: Something you can do in our own church: When your church is developing child-protection policies, focus on accountability and deterrence and less on background checks and other barriers that scare off potential volunteers. I've been reading on BoyChat how youth organizations are having a hard time attracting talent because of all the hoops volunteers have to go through. A more sensible policy is to make sure that it's nearly impossible for anyone to do anything inappropriate with children without getting caught. Some churches require 2 adults whenever minors are around. This is a common-sense policy that all but eliminates the need for things like background checks and other barriers to working with children. Remember, you WANT to be able to call anyone in the church at the last minute to fill in as a Sunday School teacher, even if they aren't on a list of pre-screened applicants. It's good for the church, it's good for those who want to volunteer at the last minute, and most of all, it's good for the kids. |
