I think your quite right about that. In fact, without free will, there can be no love. It's a huge thing that He has done for us, to give us that. But it makes it all worth it when we choose to love Him and obey Him. When a boy decides to throw his arms around us and tell us he loves us, it is a wonderful model of our decision to love God, or better still, His love for us. (That didn't happen to me this time, the 'arm-throwing' part, that is. But it has happened to me with a YF before. Talk about being speechless...whew!)
