I think, and this is my personal opinion, that the best thing for you to do is to just take it very slow, one day at a time, and let things develop naturally. You have the right idea, just do what you have been doing and let them get to know you over time. It will take some patience but I think it will "pay off" for you in the long run. If you really like this boy a lot (and it certainly sounds like you do) then it will be worth it.
