it is blinding obvious to people who aren't just trying to abuse the verse for their own purposes (and many do use this one in the ordination of women debates, though not yet on the gay issue as far as I'm aware) that this is about your status as a saved child of God, rather than anything to do with anything else. In the culture to which Paul was writing, it was usual for the worldly status (slave / free / man / woman) to define everything. Paul is saying that for that purpose you are not constrained by that human status. But to pretend that Paul, with his strong words about the different way that women should act in church, would be happy with the type of equality pursued now is just silly. So it is wildly inappropriate to interpret it out of context, and to do so is just mischievous.
