The bible speaks repeatedly, not about the end of all things, but about the end of the age. I believe that the current age, the age of sinfulness and human rule, will come to an end as prophesied in the bible and the next age, the age of the reign of God, will begin. I'm not sure what happens to people in between the time they die and the restoration of the Earth, perhaps they simply sleep, perhaps they are in a common waiting area (hades) awaiting judgement, perhaps they spend time in heaven or hell; but ultimately, I believe it is this world that we are destined to come back to. So, the real answer to the question of what is the afterlife like? Is that it's just like this, except without all the troubles.

I do believe there is a heaven and it is the present home of God the father, Jesus, at least some of the early saints (Abraham, Elijah, etc.), and all of the angels. But I do not believe it is our future home. That's not to say we won't ever go there to visit, just that it won't be our home, we are to inherit the Earth.

Revelation 21:3-5a
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!"...
